Online stores

A lot of webmasters don't know this but their online stores are not optimized for search engines.

Sad but true.  What this means is that all of those product pages which contain meaningful search engine food aren't getting in the search engines or being indexed properly.  Since it is the products that we want people to find and buy, it makes sense to promote them on every possible search engine and hopefully list somewhere in the first few pages of search results.

So what is the problem?  The way the URL is written. To explain let me first provide you with an example:

http://www.mystore.com/product.html?category=widgets&product=23

So why is this URL a problem you ask?  The reason is that a search engine spider (The program that finds and indexes pages of a website) sees a url with a query string (Question mark ?) and the following text as a potential trap.
There are several ways to overcome this issue so we choose a way and come up with the following URL structure for our store:

http://www.mystore.com/ category_widgets/product_greenWidget

Fixed right? Heck, we even have the product name in url, what could be better?  Actually – there are at least two things I would still change.  Even though we might be able to get these pages indexed now, we may not get far enough up in the results to increase traffic to our site.
